About ISAA

Their work is produced in a variety of forms including book and journal publications, films and documentaries, script writing and journalism. As an association ISAA has no political affiliations but seeks to encourage all who, independently of institutions, offer well-founded studies of society, in the humanities and the sciences, or ideas of cultural significance.

Purpose of ISAA

The purpose of ISAA is to encourage and support individuals who undertake independent scholarly work outside the nation's formal institutes of education and research; to promote such scholarship; and to stimulate public debate in Australia. It does so by:

Activities of ISAA

The theme for the 2010 ISAA Annual Conference is "Cultural Conflict in a Democracy". The Conference will be held in the 4th Floor Conference Room at the National Library of Australia on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 October.

Through the year ISAA chapters and groups hold meetings and organise seminars and work-in-progress sessions. Links between members and the organisation of national events are fostered by the ISAA National Council and reported through regular newsletters. A National Conference and Public Lecture are held annually. These events are open to the public, and are reported in a published Proceedings.

The ISAA Review, now a refereed journal, appears biannually. Its contents reflect ISAA's efforts to encourage dialogue between disciplines.

An idea of the range and quality of ISAA publications can be obtained from the Publications Page. Current activities of the different State Chapters of ISAA appear on the Chapters Page.
