In the Aftermath of the First World War – Women’sLegal Status Act 1918

The aftermath of the First World War ushered in significant social changes for women. In November 1918, despite some resistance from the ‘legislating brotherhood’, the NSW parliament passed the Women’s Legal Status Act, which enabled women to practise as lawyers, become Justices of the Peace and stand for election to local government and the Legislative Assembly. In this Seminar, prominent women in law, the legislature and local government will explore the contributions women have made to the law profession, to politics and legislation and to local government since the introduction of that Act.
